partner Tom Affleck is a 1970 Emory University graduate and obtained
his J.D. at Georgetown University Law Center in 1973. As
Managing Attorney for Georgia Legal Services in Brunswick, Georgia
before starting private practice, Tom represented indigent clients
throughout a 17 county area of Southeast Georgia. Some cases
handled were so significant they were written about in the acclaimed
1991 book Praying for Sheetrock by Melissa Fay Greene.
Tom sits as an Administrative Law Judge for matters before the
Georgia Department of Medical Assistance. He also is a member
of the Board of Directors of the Epilepsy Foundation - Georgia,
and is a past president of the board. He is a member of
the Atlanta Bar Association, the DeKalb Bar Association, the Georgia
Trial Lawyers Association, and the National Organization of Social
Security Claimants Representatives (NOSSCR).
Gordon obtained his B.A. (1974) and JD (1976) at the University
of Florida and his L.L.M. in Taxation at Emory University in 1982.
Prior to joining Tom Affleck in private practice in 1983, he was
Attorney/Advisor to the Social Security Administration's Office
of Hearings & Appeals where he served as Advisor to the Chief
Administrative Law Judge of the Social Security Administration
at the national level as well as an Attorney/Advisor to the Atlanta
Office of Hearings & Appeals. Larry is a sought-after
lecturer on matters of Social Security law and has been victorious
in numerous District Court cases and in 11th Circuit cases.
He has also received several awards for pro bono activities on
behalf of low-income individuals. In addition to being
a sustaining member of the National Organization of Social Security
Claimants Representatives (NOSSCR), he is a member of the State
Bar of Georgia, the State Bar of Florida and the Bar of the District
at Affleck & Gordon, Gene Bessent is a 1972 graduate of Emory
University, obtained an M.A. in English from the University of
Florida in 1974 and obtained his JD from the Georgia State College
of Law in 1990. Gene has represented clients in administrative,
state, district, and appellate courts and has extensive experience
in the areas of Social Security disability, workers' compensation,
personal injury, and professional malpractice law. Before
joining Affleck & Gordon, Gene worked in the Office of General
Counsel, Social Security Administration, and for a prominent Atlanta
insurance defense firm. He has made seminar presentations
in the areas of professionalism and Social Security law.
graduating from Georgia State University in 1992, Melinda Hart
attended Cumberland Law School in Alabama, where she received
her JD in 1995 and was Assistant Justice of the Henry Upson Sims
Moot Court Board. Before joining Affleck & Gordon as
an Associate in 1997, Melinda was in individual private practice
with a particular emphasis on veteran's disability and Social
Security disability. She is the current Section Chair for the
Section of the State Board of Georgia. She also is
a member of the National Organization of Veterans Advocates and
has received several awards for pro bono activities on behalf
of veterans. Melinda is admitted to practice in the United
States Court of Veterans Appeals, The Supreme Court of the State
of Georgia, the Middle District of Georgia, and the Superior and
State Courts of Georgia. Melinda also is a lecturer on Veterans
and Social Security law.
