including contact lenses. We have an in-house optical shop with
the latest styles in frames and lenses available on the market.

Laser Vision Correction, Cataracts and General Ophthalmology
A graduate from Clemson University with a BS &
MS in bioengineering, Dr. Welborn is a third generation graduate
from the Medical University of South Carolina. Dr. Welborn completed
his residency at the Medical College of Georgia and began his private
practice in 1984. He is board certified by the American Board of
Ophthalmology and a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology
as well as the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons,
South Carolina Medical Association and South Carolina Society of
Dr. Welborn has been performing Refractive Surgery
since 1993 and was the first resident Greenville surgeon to perform
Laser Vision Correction. Dr. Welborn is a nationally and internationally
trained and affiliated surgeon with The Laser Center of the Piedmonts.
He, having had Lasik himself, believes in individualized care. By
doing so, he does his own pre-assessments for Lasik including all
the pre-operative and post-operative care. Dr. Welborn is an experienced
surgeon in PRK since 1996 and Lasik since 1998.
While seeing patients for general ophthalmology including
routine eye exams, Dr. Welborn also is an experienced surgeon in
treatment of glaucoma, including medical and surgical treatment
for diabetic related eye problems, functional eyelid problems and
ocular trauma. Special interest also includes refractive cataract
surgery using the ARRAY, multifocal lens implant and surgical corrections
for astigmatism. Also, if you have a few crows feet that are starting
to bother you, Dr. Welborn can also help you with those using the
new N-Lite Laser treatment, this treatment that takes so little
time it can be done on your lunch hour.
Cataracts and General Ophthalmology
Dr. Cousar graduated from Davidson College in Charlotte,
N.C. and attended Duke University School of Medicine. He completed
his residency in ophthalmology at Duke University Medical Center.
After serving a tour of duty in South East Asia as a captain in
the U.S. Army Medical Corps, he came to Greenville to start his
private practice 1967. Since that time, Dr. Cousar served as Chairman
of the Ophthalmology department with the Greenville Hospital System
in 1973, President of the Medical Staff with Greenville Hospital
System in 1986 and Chair of the Credential Committee with Greenville
Hospital System in 1989. From 1994 to 1999, Dr. Cousar was president
of Carolina Multispecialty Associates, P.A. and in the past served
as a board member of the Lions Club Eye Bank. Dr. Cousar is certified
by the American Board of Ophthalmology, a Fellow of the American
Academy of Ophthalmology, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons
and a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive
Dr. Cousar's primary interests are in general ophthalmology
with a special emphasis on the most advanced techniques of modern
cataract surgery. Sutureless cataract surgery was first introduced
to the Upstate of South Carolina in 1990 by Dr. Cousar. He introduced
the foldable silicone lens implant to the upstate in the early 1980’s.

A graduate from Bob Jones University with a master’s
in divinity, Dr. Lopez decided to go further and attend the University
of Illinois College of Medicine where he met his lovely wife Ramieh.
He completed his residency training for ophthalmology at Louisiana
State University Medical Center where he specialized in cataract
surgery, treating diseases of the eye and contact lens technology.
Dr. Lopez is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology.
Since joining Carolina's Eye Care, P.A. in July 2000,
Dr. Lopez has been practicing comprehensive general ophthalmology,
which includes cataract surgery, minor surgery, treatment of glaucoma
and laser treatment for diabetic eye disease. Dr. Lopez uses a clear
cornea no-stitch micro incision technique for cataract surgery,
which includes intraocular lens implantation and the use of ultrasound
technology. This is currently state-of-the-art for this procedure.
With contact lens technology changing every day, Dr. Lopez stays
abreast of the latest innovations in contact lenses in order to
offer the most advanced contact lenses available on the market.
By being the only ophthalmologist in Greenville who
is fluent in English and Spanish, Carolina's Eye Care, P.A. feels
that Dr. Lopez is better able to provide care to a broader portion
of the upstate community. His service to the community also includes
volunteering at the free clinic and being active in the Rotary Club.
