My Personal Battle
with Drugs

Dear friend, Many of us have battled with drugs. When I was seventeen years old I developed asthma. For a period of six years I was taking several medications 3 -4 times a day, everyday. I know that these are not the drugs you were expecting when you read this, but these drugs are real and can cause harm. I became a respiratory therapist in large part because I wanted to learn more about asthma and it's treatment. One day I woke up with a very painful neck and grudgingly allowed a friend of mine talk me into going to a chiropractor office. Once there, the doctor examined me thoroughly and began treatment for my neck. On the first visit he mentioned casually that I might not need the asthma medicine as much in the future. I rolled my eyes and said "just fix my neck and I will be happy". To my surprise, part way into my care plan I began to skip many of my doses of inhalers. Eventually I stopped taking them altogether! In order to study this amazing phenomenon further, I enrolled to get my doctorate in chiropractic. What I learned while at Life University, was the chiropractor who helped me was not treating my asthma, he was simply treating my body so it could have a chance to work right. I also learned that chiropractors don't treat headaches or lower back pain or neck pain. They only treat the body to improve function! This was an important idea to learn. Imagine moving from treating a symptom to treating the specific cause of a specific problem. Today in my practice in Charleston, I treat hundreds of patients with complaints of headaches, low back pain, neck pain, arm, leg pain and asthma. If you were to ask any of my patients, they would tell you to stop chasing the symptom and correct the cause of the symptom. "If all the medicine in the world were thrown into the sea it would be bad for fish and good for humanity." O.W.
