Dr. Mel Kohan, founder
and Medical Director of the Florida Lighthouse, has been involved
in HIV care since 1988 when he was attending clinician and acting
medical director at Northwest Health Clinic in Ft. Lauderdale.
Currently, he is on staff at several local hospitals and sees
HIV patients there, as well as in both offices.
Dr. Jerry Ondrusek, Co-Medical Director of the Florida Lighthouse,
has been involved in infectious disease medicine since 1986. Beginning
in 1993, he was on staff at University of Arizona Medical School
where he, in addition to his duties as physician, was responsible
for teaching medical students and residents and gave lectures
in HIV treatment. He has been affiliated with the Florida Lighthouse
since 1995.
Dr. Cesar Randich, who joined the Florida Lighthouse as Associate
Physician last year, had his residency training and infectious
disease fellowship at Wayne State University in Detroit beginning
in 1990. The clinical training program consisted of rotations
in three inner-city university hospitals and in the VA Medical
Center, providing ample exposure to HIV inpatient care with a
strong emphasis on HIV outpatient care as well.
Dr. Hamed Komaiha also joined the Florida Lighthouse as an Associate
Physician last year. He had his residency training and infectious
disease fellowship at UC-Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, California
and has been a practicing physician since 1983, serving as a Military
Physician in the Egyptian army.
Dr. Jose C. Villalba recently joined the Florida Lighthouse as
an Associate Physician, relocating from his infectious disease
practice in Altamonte Springs, Florida. He has been involved in
infectious disease medicine since 1994, and has been on numerous
hospital infection control and review committees since 1990.
The Florida Lighthouse has participated in all available clinical
trials and/or expanded access programs over the last five years,
offering patients early treatment with such medications as Epivir,
Crixivan, Rescriptor, Ziagen, and Sustiva.
All of the physicians at the Florida Lighthouse are board certified
in Internal Medicine, and board certified in Infectious Disease. |

The
traveler is educated on all aspects of the proposed trip - the
travel itinerary, duration of the trip and anticipated access
to medical care in the respective country. Education on jet lag,
motion sickness, diseases expected in the countries to be visited
as well as precautionary measures to take to prevent certain diseases
will be discussed. |

- Vaccinations,
both required and recommended, are provided.
- The traveler
will be provided with a detailed report on the countries
to be visited-this report includes the weather, current
epidemics, and endemic diseases in the area and vaccination requirements.
- Prescriptions
and any other medications as needed are provided.
- Assistance
for travelers with special problems such as AIDS is
offered.
- Prophylaxis
for the following: malaria, hepatitis-b, hepatitis-a,
polio, rabies, typhoid, meningococcal, Japanese encephalitis,
cholera, etc. is available.
- We provide
post-travel evaluations for the returning traveler.
This includes a complete medical evaluation with expertise
in clinical tropical medicine in the event the traveler
develops any illness or medical problems related to
his/her recent travel.
