Pre-K

mcginnins woods country day school students and teachers

McGinnis Woods offers an extensive Pre-K program including:

  • PreK3
  • PreK3/4
  • PreK4

Pre-Kindergarten children are making developmental strides and expressing an interest in the world around them. They want to touch, smell, hear, and test things for themselves. They are eager to learn. They learn by experiencing and by doing. The Pre-K4 curriculum is designed to meet these needs. The Land of the Letter People is a warm, friendly curriculum which children are encouraged to try out their developing literacy and social skills with the assurance that their own knowledge and ideas are respected and valued.

The Letter People area great help in getting children of varying backgrounds to work together for mutual learning. They are not just letters of the alphabet, or a phonics devise. They are not toys. They are people, with their own characteristics and their own personalities. As with any group of people, no two letters are alike. That means that with each new Letter Person introduced, the social dynamics of the class changes and new learning becomes possible. The Land of the Letter People uses a thematic plan, which includes: Reading, Writing, Science, Safety, Health, Social Studies, Math, Art, and foreign language.

Ask any teacher or parent about the most important aspect of education and more often the response will be the student/teacher ratio. According to a four-year study conducted in Tennessee, observations confirmed that "children who were originally enrolled in smaller classes continued to perform better that their grade-mates (whose school experience had begun in larger classes), when they were returned to regular-sized classes in later grades. After the four year study, it was clear that the smaller classes did produce substantial improvements in earlier learning and cognitive studies." (Fredrick Mosteller, Ph.D.) With that said, McGinnis Woods Country Day School will make a commitment to smaller classes. The Pre-K4 class will be at least 10% smaller than the state funded lottery program. This decrease in class size is backed up by statistics and we feel this will offer your child the best environment for learning.

Children are divided by age and developmental skill level. Children with similar skill levels are grouped together to foster successful learning and confidence. Class sizes are small to ensure ample one-on-one time with each child, as well as a calm yet stimulating learning environment.

Children enjoy many hands-on activities, arts & crafts, music, as well as special guest speakers that are a hit with this age group, including doctors, scientists, police officers and more. All teachers have degrees and are certified to teach this special age group, to ensure a successful beginning to their school career.
