ophthalmic assistants, a business office manager, and
experienced support staff who strive to make your visit
with us the very best.

Samuel
L. Tyson, M.D. is the last of nine siblings, of Margery S. Tyson
and the late Samuel M. Tyson of Nevis, West Indies. Dr. Tyson
grew up in New Haven, Connecticut where he was top ranked in
his class at James Hillhouse High School, graduating with the
bicentennial class of 1976. He graduated from the prestigious
Wesleyan University in Middletown Connecticut with a Bachelor
of Arts Degree in 1981, majoring in Psychology, and excelling
in the premedical curriculum. He earned two varsity athletic
letters, for track and field, where he excelled in the Triple
Jump and Long Jump events.
He graduated
from Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts,
receiving his Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree in 1985. After
medical school he decided to start his migration southward.
His first stop was Howard University Hospital in Washington,
D.C. Dr. Tyson completed his one -year Internship in Transitional
Medicine in 1986. This included training in Internal Medicine,
general Surgery, Emergency Room Medicine, Obstetrics/Gynecology,
Urology and the Coronary Intensive Care Unit. He married the
former Pamela Dawson of Camden, New Jersey an accountant, before
starting his three-year Ophthalmology residency. He completed
his training in ophthalmology at Howard University Hospital
and affiliated hospitals and institutions where he was Chief
Resident of Ophthalmology in 1989.
Dr. Tyson
began practicing Ophthalmology in Greensboro, North Carolina
in 1989, when he joined a large group private practice. He remained
employed by the practice for 7 years and was a major contributor
in their success. He gained tremendous experience as his practice
focused on state of the art, small incision cataract surgery,
glaucoma medical, laser, and surgical care, and managing retinovascular
diseases such as Diabetic Retinopathy. He maintains active surgical
staff privileges at Moses Cone Health System, and HEALTHSOUTH
Surgical Center of Greensboro. Dr. Tyson's two children Chanelle
(12) and Samuel II (8) were both born in Greensboro, NC.
Dr. Tyson
decided to start his own private practice of Ophthalmology in
1996, named, Piedmont Eye Center, PA. The practice focuses on
the expert management of Cataracts, Glaucoma and and Diabetic
Retinopathy. Dr. Tyson is board certified by the National Board
of Medical Examiners, the American Board of Ophthalmology, and
is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He is
licensed to practice medicine and surgery by the North Carolina
Board of Medical Examiners.
He is a
member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery,
The North Carolina Medical Society, The Old North State Medical
Society, The Greater Greensboro Medical Society and The Greensboro
Medical Society. He has been on the executive committee of the
Greensboro Medical Society since 1992, having served as member-at-large
from 1992-1994, Treasurer form 1994-1998, President-elect from
1998-2000, and is now serving as president for the 2000-2002
term.
Dr. Tyson
is a long- term member of Mt. Zion Baptist church in Greensboro
and Sportime Athletic club. He loves athletics, is an avid basketball
player and has volunteered his skills over the past 3 years
coaching youth basketball at the Guilford College YMCA. He is
presently an assistant coach with the Greensboro Galaxy AAU
basketball club. He is a member of the "Doc Jocks",
a basketball team which play games to raise funds for local
charities.
