Root
Canal Therapy
When the pulp or the "nerve center" of a tooth becomes
unhealthy, two alternative treatments are available: extraction
of the tooth or root canal therapy.
Root canal therapy permits the tooth to be retained and restores
its health so that it can function normally and look natural.
(First)
In a tooth where the pulp is exposed or unhealthy, an opening is
made through the crown into the root canal system. Local anesthesia
is used when there is still sensation in the pulp.
The length of the root canal is measured, and then the pulp is carefully
removed from the canal. The canal is cleaned and shaped. A cotton
pellet impregnated with a medicinal agent is placed into the tooth
to help reduce bacteria, and a temporary filling is placed on the
tooth until the next visit.
(Next)
The temporary filling and cotton pellet are removed and the canal
is cleaned and shaped to prepare it for filling. Local anesthesia
may again be used this visit if there is sensation in the pulp.
(Third)
The temporary filling is removed and the canal is dried with absorbent
paper points. When the dentist determines that the root canal therapy
is ready for completion, gutta percha points coated with endodontic
cement are used to completely seal the root canal system.
Whenever root canal therapy is performed, we strongly recommend
that a "post build up" and crown be placed on the tooth.
Complete Dentures
In our dental office,
we make complete dentures in five separate steps:
Step One: An initial impression is taken, along with a counter
impression of the opposing teeth.
Step Two: A final impression is taken using the "custom
tray." This impression is more exact than the initial impression.
Step Three: The special plastic and wax plates are trimmed
and measured by the dentist to assure a proper bite. This process
is called "bite registration."
Step Four: On this visit the plastic plates with teeth are
fitted into the patient's mouth. It is on this visit that the appearance
of the teeth is checked. If you would like a different color, size,
or tooth appearance, this is the visit to inform the dentist.
Step Five: The denture is inserted in the patient's mouth
and is complete. Some minor adjustments will be made by the dentist
to make the denture as comfortable as possible. Smile! |
